XBRL
Definition
XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is a standardized, machine-readable format for the electronic submission of financial reports. Individual financial statement items are given defined tags from a taxonomy, so that they can be read out and compared automatically. In the EU, the format is the basis for the European Single Electronic Format (ESEF).
Why it matters for small caps
For smaller issuers, machine-readable reporting lowers the hurdle to comparing metrics automatically and increases data quality. However, errors in tagging can lead to incorrect analyses if items are assigned imprecisely.
Common misreadings
- XBRL data is regarded as automatically error-free, even though incorrect or company-specific tags can impair comparability.
